Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall: Tears, Trials and Tangled Hearts

I can’t stop thinking about Broken Country. I was completely obsessed with this book – so much so that I found myself pausing at certain moments to take it all in. I’ve never teared up reading a book before, but when I reached those final few pages, I realised I had tears in my eyes. It’s powerful, emotional, and incredibly thought-provoking.

Broken Country explores themes of love, loss, and the devastating impact of unresolved grief. The novel follows Beth, who was just seventeen when she met Gabriel – her first love, who made her feel seen in a way no one else had. But Gabriel left, and it was Frank who picked up the pieces. Years later, Beth and Frank are married, living a quiet life on Frank’s family farm, still nursing the wounds of their shared tragedy – the loss of their son, Bobby. When Gabriel unexpectedly returns to their village, Beth’s emotions are thrown into turmoil, and the delicate balance she’s found begins to unravel.

The book unfolds across three timelines – the summer Beth first met Gabriel, the present-day events in 1966, and a trial that looms over the story like a storm cloud. Hall’s ability to weave these threads together is remarkable, slowly revealing the devastating consequences of past choices. As the trial unfolds, questions linger: Who is dead? And who is responsible?

Why I Loved This Book

  1. Emotional Depth: Hall doesn’t shy away from raw emotion. The way she portrays grief – both in Beth’s lingering pain over Bobby and in Leo’s devastation after losing his beloved dog – is incredibly moving. The characters’ struggles felt authentic, and their moments of vulnerability had a real impact on me.
  2. Stunning Writing: Hall’s prose is beautiful without feeling overdone. Every sentence feels purposeful, and her descriptions of the Dorset landscape give the book a haunting yet hopeful tone. The way she quietly builds tension – from the stray dog’s arrival to the courtroom revelations – is masterful.
  3. Memorable Characters: The people in this book linger with you long after you finish reading. Beth’s relationship with both Gabriel and Frank felt complex and deeply human. Frank’s steady presence and quiet grief contrast with Gabriel’s charismatic intensity, and both men shape Beth in meaningful ways. Jimmy, Frank’s troubled brother, adds yet another layer of tension – a reminder of how messy family ties can be.

My Reflection

This isn’t a book you breeze through – it’s one you sit with, reflect on, and carry with you. The slow reveal of Bobby’s story was particularly devastating, and the way the book was resolved had me thinking about the book long after I’d turned the final page.

Would I Recommend

If you’re someone you loves character-driven stories that blend romance, family drama, and mystery, I can’t recommend Broken Country enough. In fact, I’d probably recommend this book to anyone I could. I finished the final chapter with tears in my eyes, feeling a strange mix of sadness and hope – and I know that’s a testament to Hall’s incredible storytelling.
